Members of the Senior Band, along with their conductor Simon Gresswell, are celebrating after a fine 4th placing at the Midlands Regional Championships, held on Saturday March 11th.
For the second year running, the band was drawn very early in the large sixteen-band field, this year playing off a number three draw. Their performance of Philip Sparke’s ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’ drew praise from members of the audience and in particular the contest’s live commentary from Chris Thomas of 4BarsRest, who described the performance as ‘A very stylish account’ and ‘an early pace setter indeed’.
As the band members either listened to more performances or enjoyed a well-earned drink afterwards it became clear that there were perhaps seven or eight performances likely to catch the ear of adjudicators Dr Chris Davis and Kevin Wadsworth, and Enderby’s was very much one of them.
Before the results, both British Bandsman and 4BarsRest predicted first place for the band, however the people who really matter – the adjudicators - placed the band a still very pleasing fourth. The winners were Foresters Brass, with Rushden Town coming second and Hathern taking third place. All in all an excellent day for local bands with three of the top four bands coming from Leicestershire.
The result is especially satisfying, because the band was under some pressure to be placed well due to disappointing results in the last two years. A poor result this year would have seriously threatened the band’s first section status. However, this year’s result springs the band back up towards the top of the first section table.
This latest result comes after an equally fine ninth place in January in a large and tough field at Butlin’s, demonstrating the hard work by the band’s members and in particular Simon is paying dividends.
The band will next be performing on Saturday 25th March, alongside the Wind Band and Concert Band in a memorial concert for Neil Townsend, the organisation’s long-standing president. For more information on this event, please click here.
