Enderby Youth Band
Enderby Youth Band has a long and proud history dating back to the 1980's. The Band's current Musical Director is Trevor Hounsome, who took over the leadership of the Band from Stuart Osgood in July 2004.
Throughout its history, the emphasis has always been on achieving high musical standards….whilst having fun! The Youth Band has often been described as a “musical Youth Club”, and the social side is as important to our youngsters as the playing.
With this in mind the Band has specialised in Entertainment contest successes, the most prestigious of which has been winning the top Entertainment prize at the Action Medical Research Youth Brass Band Entertainment Festival of Great Britain on two occasions – in 2000 and 2006, whilst in 2010 we achieved second place. This major competition is attended by only the best Youth Bands of Great Britain, and standards are consequently extremely high.
Other contest successes include Silver Awards in 2005, 2007 and 2010 from the National Youth Brass Band Championships, and 4th place in the British Open Youth Brass Band Championships of 2006. The Band was also ranked 3rd in the 2010 Butlin's Mineworkers Championships.
On the social side, the Band organise an annual residential Training Weekend with guest Musical Directors and Tutors to introduce the Band to new music. The Band has also undertaken concert tours of Belgium, France (on four occasions) and Cornwall, our most recent trip abroad was to Brass Band Remiremont at Easter 2010. We were honoured to host a return visit by the same Band in August 2010.
The Band is proud of our role in the Community. In 2008, we were delighted to be awarded the Blaby District Council's Award for Outstanding Achievement. Throughout the year, besides our Contest work, we play at a host of Community Events (See the 'News & Events' page for upcoming events). Typical events include:
- Formal concerts for local Churches / Village Halls
- Bandstand and Fete performances in the Summer
- Commemorative Fete performances: Radio Leicester Carol Service, Remembrance Day Parade, Battle of Britain service, Blaby District Council Awards Ceremony
- Fundraising ensembles in shopping Centres - especially at Christmas
Enderby Youth Band is a special organisation. Many local Brass Bands have beginner groups - but very few Bands in the country are able to offer the opportunity for these youngsters to go on and play to a high standard with a Youth Brass band of national standard.
Both Youth and Junior Bands have a long tradition of developing our musicians to a high standard - we believe the training and the opportunities we offer are second to none. New members are always welcome. Complete beginners and recent starters can join our Junior Band, while more experienced players (Grade 2-3 upwards) can go straight into our Youth Band. Whichever Band you join, you will be guaranteed a high standard of tuition, along with plenty of fulfilment and fun.
